Biography
Nina Elisabeth Palmquist's family settled in Oakland, California when she was an infant. She married Earl Warren on October 14, 1925 after meeting him at a swimming party the same year. Although Earl Warren took office as Governor in January 1943, it was not until April 1 that the family moved into the Governor's Mansion. Nina had the mansion renovated in order to make it feel like a true home for her large family. Nina, Earl and their six children became the longest occupants of the Mansion, living there for ten years. As First Lady, Nina loved to entertain and to cook, particularly her chocolate cake and Swedish dishes. She hosted official dinners and teas for government officials and their wives, as well as, informal gatherings for personal friends and children's groups. She also made it a point to cook meals for needy families. Nina Warren died on April 24, 1993 at the age of 100. She is buried at Arlington National Cemetery next to her husband.
