Biography
Anna Bissell grew up in St. Louis. During the 1820s, Anna’s father, Captain Lewis Bissell, built the home in which Anna grew up. The house still stands and is considered to be the oldest surviving house in St. Louis. While living in St. Louis, Anna Bissell met Henry Haight, a San Francisco attorney. They married on January 24, 1855 and set sail from New York to San Francisco on February 20. Anna and Henry went on to have five children No records of her activities as First Lady survive. The Haights were the last family to use the Stanford Mansion as a Governor’s residence. Anna Haight died on March 29, 1898 in Oakland, California. She is buried in the Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland.
